An collection of thirty-four excellent studies of the relationship between warfare and society, ranging from the pre-state societies of Britain, Europe and Papua New Guinea, to modern wars in Bosnia and Croatia. The product of a research project carried out at Aarhus University, and also including papers from associated seminars and workshops, this volume covers a wide range of theoretical and material issues not only on the physical destruction of warfare, but also its social and political realities and consequences. Papers are arranged according to thematic sections focusing on theoretical concepts of warfare, war in pre-state and state societies, warfare, rituals and mass graves, and warfare, weaponry and material culture.
