Papers from the 5th International Conference on Waterfront Archaeology in Copenhagen, May 1998. In the Middle Ages, harbour towns were important centres in the communication and distribution systems that facilitated trade and economic development. These towns were, with their shipbuilding industries and seamen, important factors in the military apparatus of medieval kingdom, i.e. seaborne trade influenced urban development. The maritime topography of the medieval town has become a key topic in the study of urbanisation and the conference papers present a comprehensive approach to the subject.Texts in various languages.
