The book sets out to investigate the complex issue between ethnicity and material culture, specifically the ethnicity of early medieval vessels built and used in the maritime landscape of the Oder Mouth Area. This area of study was chosen particularly because of extensive changes of its cultural landscape in the course of a millenium of history (400-1400 AD), changes brought not only by the human actors in that area: The Germani, the Slavs, The Scandinavians and the Germans, but also by a dynamic geomorphologic environment. Thus, ships are seen not merely as functional objects, but as major vehicles in understanding processes of historical and cultural change.
